RANKIN INLET - A group of nine couples got to experience a little culinary delight this past Valentine's Day when they dined at the first Cupid's Lunch at Maani Ulujuk high school (MUI) in Rankin Inlet.

The luncheon was a fundraiser for the MUI Cooking Club, which meets weekly at the school.

Student club members learn various cooking skills and are preparing to compete in Skills Canada Nunavut, which will be held in Iqaluit this coming April.

The members of the club are Chloe Tattuinee, Anna Hickes, Michaela Angootealuk, LilaMai Adams, Cecile Noolook, Meagan Netser, Art Sateana, Ashley Petryshen, and Kristina Tatty.

School vice-principal Kevin Bussey said the gold medal winners at Iqaluit may get a chance to compete in the Canadian Skills competition in Prince Edward Island this coming May.

He said the winner of that event would then compete at the World Skills being held in Calgary, Alta., this coming September.

"We decided to start small with our first Cupid's Lunch as many of the club members are still in junior high," said Bussey.

"We sold nine tickets at $50 per couple, and the guests were treated to a three-course meal of soup, bannock, stuffed chicken breast, potato and vegetable, chocolate cheesecake, tea and coffee.

"The home economics room was decorated with a Valentine's Day theme and there were lots of love songs played during the meal.

"Those who attended said they would look forward to other such events, so the MUI Cooking Club is looking at one for St. Patrick's Day."

Darlene and Dave Petryshen were among the nine couples who attended Cupid's Lunch.

Darlene said the food was absolutely fantastic.

"My daughter (Ashley) is in the cooking class and I was very proud of their efforts," said Darlene.

"They prepared all three courses from scratch and it was all delicious.

"In fact, I was surprised at just how good the food was because the students are so young who prepared it, but it was just awesome.

"It's just great these kids are learning to cook so well, and if they hold another event like this, Dave and I will certainly go again."
