The beauty of phone books
By Daron Letts Northern News Services Published Friday, March 20, 2009
All the original Northern works on display have appeared on the cover of the Northwestel telephone directory. The original paintings, part of the company's corporate art collection, hang in the centre's mezzanine gallery.
This year's cover features an acrylic on canvas by Jen Walden titled Herd Migration. It depicts the movement and texture of a caribou herd using a close-up perspective. "I think the exhibit is fantastic," Walden said. "I recognize some from the covers, but it's nicer to see originals. It's really flattering to see my work hanging in the same room as paintings by Graham Shaw, Archie Beaulieu and Terry Pamplin." The show includes Pamplin's work Past Times to Pastimes, which adorned the directory in 2006. "It's basically a little meditation on snowshoeing," he said. "Traditonal pastimes have become competitive sport, whereas in the past they were a necessity for survival." Pamplin is also the exhibit designer with the centre. "It was so nice to see the original pieces when I was hanging the work," he said. "There's a wide range of styles." Other Yellowknife artists include Aiden Cartwright and Gail Cyr. The exhibit runs until May 29. |
