Man dies in sweat lodge
Paul Bickford Northern News Services Published Monday, February 23, 2009
The RCMP identified the deceased as 52-year-old Lawrence Catholique. Cathy Menard, the deputy chief coroner for the NWT, said preliminary autopsy results show carbon monoxide in Catholique's system was in the lethal range. "That is the cause of death," Menard said, adding Catholique was deceased for approximately three days before being found in the sweat lodge. Menard said the carbon monoxide was produced by coals burned in the airtight sweat lodge, which was located in Catholique's backyard. The RCMP does not suspect foul play. Menard said she is not aware of any previous deaths in the NWT involving carbon monoxide poisoning in a sweat lodge. She said there may be recommendations on sweat lodge safety when the coroner's office releases a report on Catholique's death. The report will take six months at the earliest. Catholique was a community wellness worker and was also employed at the Snap Lake diamond mine.
