Strike three for drunk driver
Cara Loverock Northern News Services Published Friday, February 20, 2009
Andrew Anderson, 28, pleaded guilty to one charge of operating a motor vehicle while impaired, stemming from an Oct. 4, 2008 incident. Crown prosecutor Maryse Nassar said at roughly 11:44 p.m. that night RCMP received a call that a truck had backed into a Jeep near Sutherland's Drugs and then drove away. Municipal Enforcement located a vehicle matching the description and RCMP officers were able to find and stop the truck a little after midnight. Nassar said the police officer "could detect immediately a smell of liquor" coming from inside the vehicle. Anderson was also observed by the officer to be squinting and slurring his speech. He was taken into the RCMP detachment and subsequently charged. "Don't be drinking and driving. It's not a good thing to be doing," Anderson said to the court before he was sentenced. Anderson is banned from driving for three-years in addition to the 120 days in jail. "This is the minimum sentence set by law. You have two previous related convictions," said Chief Judge Brian Bruser. "It could affect his employment afterwards as well." |
