Yk1 to join board-merger protest
Andrew Livingstone Northern News Services Published Friday, February 13, 2009
Teachers from all over the NWT will be amassing in Yellowknife next week for the first ever territorial teachers' conference. Spence said they are trying to co-ordinate with organizers of the conference to get as many teachers at the protest as possible. "We're working on arranging a time that will work best for everyone," he said. "So tell as many people as you can and let's get out and fight against this." Next year's school calendar released The Yk1 board passed a motion Tuesday evening to approve the 2009-2010 school calendar. The calendar for the next school year contains a few changes from the current year's calendar. Students will be in class a total of 182.5 days compared to 180 days this year. The calendar was sent out to some members of the community for feedback. Superintendent Metro Huculak said they had one comment requesting they start classes after Labour Day. Huculak said it wasn't something they are able to do. "If we started after Labour Day we wouldn't have enough time to get in the required amount of class days," he said. Spring break will be from March 6 to 21, 2010 to coincide with the Arctic Winter Games being held in Grand Prairie, Alta. Finance Committee prepares 2009-2010 budget Finance Committee member and board trustee Terry Brookes said work is underway to prepare the Yk1 budget for the 2009-2010 school year. They met in early February for an initial meeting and will be working over the next two months to put together the budget, hopefully by April. Brookes said they are focusing on the district's strategic plan of quality education, aboriginal education and special needs. Board chair Duff Spence said it's expected that Yk1 will receive the same per capita amount, $12,000 per student, but their overall revenue will go down. "With declining enrolment in the city, we're going to see a drop in total revenue," he said. Spence said they will look to make any revisions before they approve the budget and send it to the Minister of Education before the end of the fiscal year in June. |
