Back in the Lions' den
Dez Loreen Northern News Services Published Thursday, January 22, 2009
The clubhouse, located at Boot Lake, has been under renovation since September 2008.
Inuvik Lions' Club secretary-treasurer Bev Garven said the clubhouse is looking young again, with new flooring, walls and decor. "The first thing people are going to notice is the new deck out front," said Garven. She said the inside of the building looks totally new, with different flooring, a bigger kitchen and renovated bathrooms. "We took out the old carpet and wall panelling," she said. Once the club settles into the renovated space, they will hang up their wall decorations again, making it look more like the den of old. Garven said the change was long overdue. "We totally gutted the inside and brought it all up to date," she said. "We put in a new window and it's much brighter inside." Garven said the first event to be hosted in the den will be a fundraiser for the Inuvik Food Bank. The event will also serve another purpose. The annual Robbie Burns' dinner is dated for the next night, but both events will merge for the Saturday night festivities. "We want to have a quasi-Burns dinner on Saturday," said Garven. Along with the food, the people in attendance will also be privy to a special performance by Razzamajazz. The jazz group has not performed as the original five members in Inuvik for the past year and a half. Saxophone player Bob Mumford said the group is back together practising in their studio in town. Mumford said the event will also be a way for the band to promote their new album, which was recently released. "We hope the CDs get into town before the show on Saturday," said Mumford on Tuesday morning. The album will be on sale at Boreal Books, Originals and Moe's Stationery. Mumford, who also sits on the board of the Inuvik Food Bank, said the event is shaping up to be a big one for all groups involved. "This is a great fundraiser for the food bank," he said. Mumford said the evening will be good preparation for the band, because they're due to play in Yellowknife on Jan. 30. Razzamajazz will be joined on the stage by other local acts, including Tony Sexton and his musical group. |
