IQALUIT - Nunavut's Department of Environment is offering two free environmental awareness workshops in Iqaluit this week geared towards anyone who spends time on the land.

The Leave No Trace workshops, Jan. 19 and 22 at Nunavut Arctic College's Old Residence, will be facilitated by Lucy O'Driscoll, an environmental consultant and educator with the Department of Environment in Newfoundland.

"It's really sort of part of a bigger plan to promote environmental stewardship," said Sharina Dodsworth of the Nunavut Department of Environment. "It's going to cover topics like waste disposal and avoiding wildlife contact.

"There's a lot of tips and points we will be offering people they might not normally think of."

The workshop will also explore other principles of Leave No Trace camping, including planning ahead for trips out on the land, minimizing campfire impacts and travelling and camping on durable surfaces.
