"I'm not into anything too subtle," said jewelry designer Naomi Lewsaw.

The offbeat artist creates unique, beaded jewelry by combining hot pink freshwater pearl, vivid blue lapis, turquoise, jade, carnelian, quartz, sterling silver, slices of agate and fiery red coral with Northern materials like caribou antler, muskox leather and, soon, fish vertebrae, porcupine quills and birch bark.

"It's a multitude of brightness," she said.

Lewsaw began working from home as a full-time artist about a year ago under her design label Lulu Bijou. She quit her job as a purchasing control clerk to focus on her art while caring for her youngest child, two-and-a-half-year-old Liam.

"I feel really lucky that I can stay at home beading and put a roast on at the same time." she said.

Lulu Bijou features multi-strand necklaces, pendants and earrings that demand attention. Lewsaw uses raw, unfinished rock and polished chips of semi-precious stone to infuse the daring colour with an earthy, organic texture.

"I just really love that you can change an entire look by throwing a necklace on," Lewsaw said. "You can wear a big rock n' roll statement necklace and that totally completes your outfit."

Lewsaw showcased her work at the Arctic Winter Games fashion show staged by fellow Northern designer Jamie Look. She sells her jewelry through the airport gift shop and at Just Furs in Old Town. She said she plans to organize home parties in the new year, as well.

The latest Lulu Bijou line of jewelry is on display Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Aurora Arts Society Art Expo in the Multiplex from noon until 6 p.m.
