Final faceoff for floor hockey

Coach and founding member of the league Allan Gillis said the event on Friday afternoon will humble the celebrations last year.
To end the season last year, the school presented the winning team of the playoffs with a smaller version of the Stanley Cup, which was escorted to the gym by the RCMP. The whole school watched as the cup arrived amid blaring sirens and flashing lights. To up the ante this season, Gillis said more awards will be given out. "We'll be giving out trophies for accomplishments over the season," said Gillis. Awards will be given for top team in the league, best goalie, top scorer and others to be announced at the event. "We're trying to build on it every year," said Gillis. To help get the staff involved, a special game will pit the teachers against their students in an all-star faceoff after the final game of the playoff. "The game is open to all staff who want to participate," he said. "We've had some good fun and participation in past years. "The kids have a love for hockey and we celebrate it." He said the teachers keep track of the stats throughout the season and tally them up for the final event. "We're keeping track of scoring, goals against and standings," said Gillis. Keeping the energy and hype up for the end of the season is not hard for the participants. "The kids know we have a big celebration for this to end the season," he said. Gillis said the whole season is a four-month endeavour that takes a lot from each of the teachers involved. When asked if the floor hockey league would be returning in the new year, Gillis said other sports groups want the gym at lunch hour. "No doubt there's still interest in holding the league after the break," he said. "But the sports committee wants the gym in the new year." "I'm sure if we left it up to the students, they would want to play the whole school year." |
