NUNAVUT - Despite yesterday’s byelection in the riding of Akulliq, residents of Kugaaruk and Repulse Bay have yet to find out who will represent them in the Nunavut legislature.

Eligible voters cast their ballot Dec. 15 in a race between candidates Helena Malliki, Steve Mapsalak, John Ningark and Marius Tungilik.

Returning officer Romeo Kopak announced that a judicial recount would be required as there was a difference of less than two per cent in the number of votes attained by frontrunners Ningark, with 157 votes, and Mapsalak, with 155 votes.

According to the initial tally, Malliki followed with 111 votes and Tungilik with 38 votes.

The voter turnout was 78 per cent.

Elections Nunavut will make the detailed results available on their website by noon today.
