INUVIK - Two local volunteer firefighters got their heads shaved for cancer research this past week.

Tim Kropp and Mike Orbell went through town gathering donations and sponsorships for their event.

The proceeds were given to the Terry Fox Foundation for cancer research.

This isn't the first time Orbell has shaved his head in support of a good cause.

"Hopefully our support can help find a cure," he said.

The two men faced the clippers this past Wednesday night before fire practice.

Jules Hyde of Northern Hilites was on hand to perform the shaving. Kropp is a four-year member of the volunteer fire department.

He said the event was something close to his heart.

"My mother died of cancer this past year in August," said Kropp.

"I did it for her memory."

Kropp was happy he was able raise approximately $1,700.

He said the search for sponsors started this past summer.

"I've been going around since July," he said.

Kropp said he grew his hair out for the occasion.

"This is the longest it's been," he said, looking at the newly-cut strands of hair in his hands.

"The last time I got my hair cut was August 2007."

He has plans for the two ponytails that were cut off before his head was shaved bald.

"I'm giving these to my daughters," he said.

Orbell, who is in his eighth year as a regular member, said he participated because he felt the cause was a worthy one.

"I'm doing this in support of cancer research," said Orbell.
