RANKIN INLET - People young and old wonder what it's like to be at the top every now and then.

So it was not surprising when a fundraiser held at Leo Ussak elementary school in Rankin Inlet was a tremendous success this past month.

The contest offered a top prize of being principal for a day at the school.

Once the tickets were sold and a prize draw held, the lucky kids whose names were drawn were Grade 3 student Qaritaq Kusugak-Clark, 8, and Grade 2 student Faith Voisey, 7.

School co-principal Tyrone Power said teacher Amanda McLarty started the project as a way to help raise funds for the annual RCMP Christmas Hamper food drive.

He said students were able to purchase $1 tickets to be entered into the draw and the tickets went in near-record time.

"There were 150 tickets made up for the draw and they sold out in one day," said Power.

"It was a good fundraiser for the RCMP Christmas Hamper and the kids had a really good time participating in it."

Kusugak-Clark said he really enjoyed being principal for a day and it was exciting to find out he had won the contest.

He said it was a lot of fun to be one of the people in charge of the school.

"My favourite part of the day was getting to drop some papers off over at Maani Ulujuk high school (MUI)," said Kusugak-Clark.

"I didn't have to talk to any parents during the day, but I did get to talk to my grandpa while we were at MUI."

Voisey said she really enjoyed her day as school principal, as well.

She said the whole day was a lot of fun and she was happy to win the contest.

"It's good to be the principal," said Voisey.

"I got to deliver the papers to some of our school workers paid, so that was fun.

"Our two real principals (Power and Sarah Ayaruak) were both good for us the whole day and we didn't have to speak to either of them once.

"I'm not just saying that either. It's the truth."
