Notes from the underground
By Daron Letts Northern News Services Updated Tuesday, October 28, 2008
If something is worth doing it's worth doing yourself. It's also worth waiting for. The second issue of the Yellowknife zine Do It Up is finally being prepared for production this week.
Issue number one of the independently-published mini-magazine debuted in October of 2006. It featured photos, cartoons, humour, a few articles and stuff like that. Zine editors Krystal Thompson and Jennifer Knowlan are piecing together an expanded collection of local stories, rants, sketches, photographs, poetry, satire, political commentary and indie journalism for the upcoming issue. The diverse content represents the work of a wide variety of Northern writers and artists. Any submissions received this week will be considered for inclusion, as well. "Anything goes," Thompson said. "It's a venue for people to put out anything they want. It's an outlet for collaborative creativity and a chance for people to say what they want without us trying to censor them in any way." Zines are self-published periodicals that eschew advertising and commercial imperatives to open spaces for printed communication. Decades before Facebook and MySpace blogs, zines gave voice to alternative perspectives on art, politics and personal and community issues. The next copy of Do It Up will be launched with a dance party at the Elks Club starting at 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 14. DJ Clarkitech from Bush League will spin the music. To submit local content for consideration, email the editors at doitupyk@gmail.com by midnight on Friday, Oct. 31. |
