Thousands of books on sale tomorrow
Daron Letts Northern News Services Published Wednesday, October 22, 2008
The sale features quality fiction and non-fiction representing Canadian and classic literature, popular American and international authors, contemporary best-sellers, art books, social science, history, Canadiana and Northern issues as well as plenty of poetry, theatre and DVDs. As usual, there is a big bunch of children's books. This year, elementary school students are receiving a coupon through their schools redeemable for one free children's book at the sale on Friday or Saturday when accompanied by a parent or caregiver. "The book sale runs on a free will donation and our sincerest desire is to get those books into the community," explained FOTYPL coordinator Tanya Krueger, adding that visitors shouldn't be shy to offer whatever token donation they wish in exchange for as many books as they can comfortably carry. "We really would like to see the material get out and promote literacy and promote readership." The book sale will be open for early-bird shoppers tomorrow evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Good will donations for carry-all-you-can book shopping will take place on Friday from noon until 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. "There are a lot of hardly-used and almost new books," said public service librarian Melissa Legacy. "It's an excellent alternative to buying brand new books since so many of the books are next to new. These are books that can go on to live a long life after the book sale. I'm always amazed by the things you can find. There's something for everybody, for sure." Extra volunteers would be greatly appreciated for the set up and tear down of the sale. Those who wish to volunteer can drop in to the library on Wednesday afternoon and lend a hand to this fund raising and literacy-promoting project.
