"The gallery purchased the (five) ceramic sculptures from a group of works that were sent for display in a retrospective of Rankin Inlet arts," said Matchbox Gallery coordinator Jim Shirley.

The pieces were on display from November until April alongside the National Gallery of Canada's collection of Rankin Inlet art from the last three decades.

The Matchbox works were purchased in June.

A sixth ceramic sculpture from the Matchbox Gallery was purchased last year.

The collaborative sculptures were created by John Kurok, Roger Aksadjuak, Leo Napayok, Jack Nuviak, Pierre Aupilardjuk and Yvo Samgushak.

These artists will be among the instructors leading an upcoming traditional arts workshop series for professional artists at the Matchbox Gallery starting next week.

In addition to ceramics, the annual workshop series offers literacy classes, numeracy classes, writing, drawing and printmaking.
