INUVIK - It's that time of year again - leaves are turning yellow and school bells are ringing.

Samuel Hearne secondary school started its year off with assemblies for the senior and junior grades.

After the assembly, students were invited to check out their new classes and lockers.

Andrew Ovayuak, a 16-year-old Grade 10 student said he was enjoying the summer and is not ready to go back to class.

"No, no, I'm not ready to come back. It's the same thing every year," he said with a smile.

The student said he learned more about responsibilities with a new job over the summer break.

He added he finished registering for his classes and was waiting for class to start on Wednesday.

"My favourite class is gym," he said.

Program support teacher Mike Millen is starting his second year working at Samuel Hearne. He said the school year has been off to a busy start with students cramming the halls and teachers making last-minute adjustments before starting the semester.

"We have a lot of new staff this year," said Millen. "There has been a lot of anticipation."

He said he hopes the year will have a good start and stay strong all the way to graduation next spring.

"I think this year has a fresh dynamic because of all the new staff," he said, explaining some of the full-time staff position haven't been filled yet, which is why Millen has taken on a double-duty. "I'm doing some work in the shop class to start the year," he said.

Working with the students and helping them succeed is one of the goals shared by Millen and other educators at the school.

"I get to work one on one with some of the students this year," he said.

Being in the busy environment of the school and seeing all the students is one of the highlights of the new year for Millen, he said.

"My favourite part of the new year is seeing all the faces of the students," he said.
