Teachers become students

"It was a good learning experience for us," said Sir Alexander Mackenzie School principal Janette Vlanich.
"There were many sessions for teachers in Grade 7 to 9," she said, adding there were different sessions available to the teachers, depending on what they wanted to learn about. "There was a big group that went out for the on-the-land session as well," she said. Andrew Samoil, program consultant for information technology for the Beaufort Delta Education Council, organized the gathering. Planning for the conference took some time, but Samoil said the execution of the week went well without any problems. "We were set up in Samuel Hearne, which was good for our needs," he said. Samoil said bringing the meetings to the teachers in remote communities is always a challenge. "This way, we were all able to get together at once and work out any questions or concerns," he said. The larger gathering meant he could bring in guest speakers to talk about changes this year. "We're introducing new report cards," said Samoil. "This worked out great because the teachers were able to ask questions to the person who wrote the new report card system." Samoil thanked the others who were involved in organizing the meeting and extended his appreciation to the grad class, who served goodies during the session. |
