The staff and students have been busy planning for the event on Friday, Sept. 26.
The start of the run is at 11:30 a.m. Organizer Paula Guy said planning for the run started a few weeks ago. "I was told we were going to have an event here at the school, so I checked it out online," she said. When at the foundation website, Guy found that a school event day was started in 2004. "The website has information about Terry Fox National school run day," she said. The run is usually held Sept. 25 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Terry Fox's Run, Guy said. The school-exclusive event stemmed from the National Terry Fox run on Sept. 14. "It was too close to the start of the year and we couldn't get anything organized," said Guy. After talking with staff members and a quick call to the Terry Fox Foundation, Guy was able to start planning the event at Samuel Hearne. "We've got some goodies like temporary tattoos, bookmarks and things," she said. The event will also serve the school to help raise school spirit and get the students motivated and active. "This will be good for the school as well," said Guy, who said he hopes the initiative will gain support from the community. "I know it's short notice but we hope that people will donate for Friday's run," she said. Sponsor forms went home with the students on Monday. That afternoon, the school showed a video to the students to promote the cause. Science teacher April Crabb said the video was unique and reached the students who had not heard of Fox or his Marathon of Hope. "A lot of them didn't know about Terry Fox or how much he had raised," said Crabb. "They were surprised to learn how young he was and how far he actually ran." She added the video helped the students understand why the event is so meaningful. "The video showed them how hard it was for him to run with one leg," she said. "They couldn't comprehend the kind of work it took to do what he did." Crabb is also helping organize the event. "My biggest challenge has been to get things ready with the media, to promote the event and let people know it's happening," she said. The day's activities will close with a floor hockey tournament to promote active living. |
