SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - The Fort Good Hope man accused of stabbing two people in Ndilo has opted for a judge and jury trial.

Darcy Edgi, 28, appeared in court Tuesday in relation to charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and mischief under $5,000. Edgi, represented in court by attorney Dan Rideout, also requested a preliminary inquiry. Chief Judge Brian Bruser chose Sept. 9 to set a date for the preliminary inquiry.

"The Crown has already shown cause for his detention," said Bruser as Edgi was taken back into custody.

Edgi is accused of stabbing two individuals on Aug. 13, sending one victim to hospital while another was treated for a cut to his arm.

No bail for woman charged with drug offences

A Yellowknife woman charged with a number of drug-related crimes appeared in court on Tuesday in pants that had the word "princess" on the backside.

Valerie Theriault is facing four charges of possession, two charges of trafficking, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of property obtained by a crime, two counts of theft under $5,000 and failure to appear in court.

Due to a publication ban none of the details of the charges could be published. Theriault's attorney, Caroline Wawzonek, requested she be released on bail.

"This is a little more than a few crumbs on a plate," Bruser said of the charges Theriault is facing. "She has to be detained."

Theriault's next court date was set for Sept. 2.

Sister pleads guilty on man's behalf

A man who was unable to appear in territorial court on Tuesday sent his sister instead.

Paul Abel, according to his sister, was in Fort McMurray, Alta. The woman said she had been instructed by her brother to enter pleas for his three charges.

Guilty pleas were entered for breaching conditions of release, willfully doing an indecent act and mischief stemming from "willfully damaging watches at Wal-Mart," according to Bruser.

Abel's next court date, relating to his sentencing, was set for Sept. 2.
