INUVIK - Get your old rusty cars out of the junkyard - the demolition derby is next Sunday afternoon.

The event takes place at the Navy pit, as it did last year.

Ned Day stands in front of his trusty car after a devastating round at the demolition derby last year. This year's event is taking place on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. A parade kicks off the event at noon, running from the post office to the Navy Road pit venue. - NNSL file photo

As usual, the day starts off with a parade of the participating vehicles in the derby.

Co-ordinator Kurt Wainman said the parade will start off at the post office.

"The parade will continue down Mackenzie Road until we get to Navy Road," said Wainman.

The parade will then follow Navy Road until the arrival at the venue.

Wainman said that there is still time for anyone who wants to enter the event with their own ride.

"Registration is open until Aug. 25," he said.

He noted that there are a lot of cars in town that are already being prepared for the event.

"I hear there are lots of cars around for this," he said.

"There's still time for someone new to register as well."

Last year, Wainman entered the derby with his 1976 Cadillac.

Painted green with a reinforced frame, Wainman's car was a force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately for his crew, the car took a bad beating in 2007 and needed serious repairs.

"I've got no engine, no tranny from last year's derby," he said with a laugh. "It took a real beating then."

But, it can be rebuilt and he has the technology.

"We've already started taking the car apart," he said.

"We're about to put a new engine in."

Once the car is done being rebuilt, Wainman plans to help others get their beasts ready for the Sunday main event.

Last year, the derby went on all afternoon, with the last heats being completed well past dinnertime.

Wainman said he hopes for good weather and a good turnout from the community.

He also noted that the Inuvik fire department will be handling admission fees for the event.

Admission is $5. Parking will be available near the site. Drivers are asked to be careful and drive slowly around pedestrians.
