The annual fall fair took place last Saturday, Aug. 9. Events were moved indoors due to rainy weather.
Luckily there was enough space in the plot area for the carnival games and activities to take place. Organizer and volunteer greenhouse co-ordinator Lindsay Trevelyan said volunteer help for the event was astounding. "We have about 30-40 people here. A lot of people have been bringing baked goods as well," she said. The greenhouse holds an in-house competition every year for biggest vegetable, best of show preserves and other crafts. This year, Trevelyan said, a team of three judges spent Friday night deliberating on the best of the best. On Saturday morning, prize ribbons were affixed to the winning entries in many categories. Trevelyan thanked the volunteers for their time judging the entries. "They spent a lot of time tasting and judging the entries," she said. Aside from the annual fair, the gift shop was open, as per a usual Saturday morning. "We've got a bake sale as well," she said. "The rain might have kept some people inside, but it's busier now," she said. "People are having fun." Mike Mulherin was one of the greenhouse enthusiasts that brought out his family. Going to the fall fair is becoming a tradition for the family. Mulherin said he brought his sons out for last year's event as well. Despite the rain and overcast sky, Mulherin said the fun at the event was like last year. "It's unfortunate about the weather, but it's fun in here," he said. For the kids, there were plenty reasons to stick around. "We're playing games, the kids are getting their faces painted," said Mulherin. The event was good, he added, because it gives an opportunity to support the greenhouse and have fun with the family. "That's what it's all about." |
