Inuvik - If you think you can hang with Inuvik's best Guitar Hero players, sign up for the tournament next week.

There will be a Guitar Hero 3 tournament in the Samuel Hearne foyer next Wednesday, Dec. 19. The event starts at 5 p.m. and is open to players who are in Secondary school and older. The event is being held at the Samuel Hearne school foyer and is being dubbed "Guitarmaggedon 2007."

Sign-up sheets can be found at the school office, or at the Inuvik Drum office.

Josh MacKenzie, one of the organizers of the event, helped put on the Halo 3 tournament last month.

MacKenzie said the tournament will be split into divisions based on difficulty levels of play.

"We'll have four categories: easy, medium, hard and expert," he said.

The tournament is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 5 p.m. in the foyer.

The deadline to sign up for the event is Tuesday, Dec. 18.

He said the playoff is open to the public, but there is an age restriction.

"We want to keep the age limit to Grade 7 and up," he said.

Similar to the Halo tournament, two large screens will be set up, each with a projector.

Although the game is available across many platforms, only the Xbox 360 version will be played.

Players are invited to bring their own guitar controllers, but there will also be a few on hand to lend for use in the tournament.

The entry fees vary depending on what difficulty the players want to compete in.

Easy will cost $2 to enter, medium for $5, hard is $7 and expert is $10 per player.

MacKenzie said that a player can only enter one division, to make it fair to others.

"The prizes will depend on the number of participants," he said.

The proceeds from the event will be given to the Inuvik Food Bank.

Video Effects has agreed to sponsor the event, donating gift certificates as prizes.

Other details of the tournament are still being decided, with meetings later this week.

Players who sign up will be given two "groupie" passes for the event for spectators.

Because many players are expected to enter, audience space could be limited, which is why passes are being given.

The school also has a no- junk-food policy, which will be in effect.

Jade Miskulin is one of the players who is already chomping at the bit to shred some virtual tunes.

"I've been playing for some time now," he said.

"I recently put down the controller for a while, but I'll be ready."

Miskulin said he can play at the expert difficulty level and is anxiously awaiting competition.

"It's going to be fun," he said.

While the young player has nearly mastered the game, he said there is still one song he has difficulty with.

"I'm still working on Lou the devil, he's the final boss."
