YELLOWKNIFE - A 19-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a police officer after attacking a Mountie in Justice of the Peace court Sunday night, according to the RCMP.
"He was taken into custody on another offence," said RCMP Const. Roxanne Dreilich.
She said that a Justice of the Peace was contacted to hear the man's arraignment on Sunday evening, and that the assault occurred during the hearing.
"It happened during the hearing and again shortly after as he was being taken into cells," she said.
The man is now facing two counts of assaulting a peace officer.
Women hit outside pizza parlour
A man was charged with two counts of assault after police stopped outside of Bruno's Pizza while on a routine patrol Nov. 11 and spotted a woman bent over with her face in her hands.
According to Dreilich, when they stopped to talk to the woman bystanders told them that the woman had just been assaulted by a man who was nearby.
After police questioned the 30-year-old woman, she said the man had assaulted her on previous occasions as well.
There was no indication from either party as to what prompted the assaults, Dreilich said, but a 26-year-old man was arrested and released with an order to have no contact with the victim.
He is facing two counts of assault, and will appear in court at a later date.
Mall guard assault
A 52-year-old woman is facing an assault charge after an incident occurring near the Centre Square Mall on November 14.
"The woman was intoxicated, and was asked to leave the premises," said Dreilich.
She said the suspect had been in a business located in the mall building where a Centre Square security guard was present.
The woman did not leave when asked, and then assaulted the security guard shortly after. Police attended the scene and were able to arrest the woman without incident.
Charges of assault are pending against the woman.
Double jeopardy
Charges are pending against a man after he reportedly attacked his spouse and another woman who tried to intervene.
Police received a report of an assault on a 38-year-old woman by a 32-year-old man around 3:50 a.m., Nov. 14.
After arriving upon the scene, the police discovered a woman at the man's house, along with his 37-year-old spouse.
Dreilich said the woman told RCMP that the man had been assaulting his spouse when she interjected, and then he struck her, and later struck his spouse as well.
The man was discovered to be intoxicated, and was arrested and held until he was sober, before being released with an order to not contact either of the victims.
"Charges of assault on both females are pending," said Dreilich.
