CAMBRIDGE BAY - The sailors who billed themselves as the Wild Vikings have been deported.

The Norwegians and Americans aboard the ship Berserk II were trying to traverse the Northwest Passage, but they were detained in late August after failing to report to the RCMP in Gjoa Haven for examination.

During an Aug. 30 hearing with a member of the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board in Cambridge Bay, captain of the Berserk II, Jarle Andhoy, was given a deportation order.

Jeffrey Kane, an American, and Norwegian Fredrik Juell were also ordered deported, as they were found to be inadmissible to Canada due to criminal convictions in their respective countries.

The two remaining crew members, one Norwegian and one American, were both given exclusion orders, meaning that they cannot return to Canada for a year unless granted special permission.
