TUKTOYAKTUK - With the weather getting warmer, many people in Tuktoyaktuk are enjoying fishing and camping at Husky Lakes.

On May 9 to 13, clients of the Tuktoyaktuk Learning Centre also joined in the fun, as part of an educational trip.

Zhara Khimgi, a community adult educator who helped organize the trip, said the six students camped from May 9 to 13.

They were accompanied by Khimji and her assistant Maureen Gruben, as well as outfitters Chuck Gruben and Ron Gruben.

"The students were chosen on their attendance, if they had 80 per cent or better," Khimji added.

While the trip was a reward for students with a strong work ethic, Khimgi said it was no vacation.

The students practiced Inuvialuktun language skills, leadership skills, science skills and even writing skills, through such activities such as keeping daily journals, holding experiments with different fishing techniques and determining the sex and species of each fish caught.

"We also visited elders at their cabins and had tea with them," added Khimgi.
