Fort McPherson - The noblest goal of a RCMP officer is to protect and to serve.
And according to Cst. Merle Carpenter, of the Fort McPherson RCMP, that sometimes means serving a grilled burger or two.
"It's about building community relations," Carpenter said on May 28.
He explained the Fort McPherson RCMP have been holding many events lately, such as open houses, barbecues and an elders' luncheon to let people become more familiar with police.
On May 25, for instance, when Chief Julius school held a science fair, Carpenter said the police were invited.
They set up a recruitment booth, so inquiring minds could ask any questions about police work.
Mayor Rebecca Blake, of Fort McPherson, has said these initiatives are a good idea.
Earlier this year, she praised efforts by RCMP to update council on their activities, and the police's frequent updates to the community via the local CBQM AM radio station.
On May 16, the Fort McPherson RCMP held a barbecue for community children outside the RCMP detachment.
This was followed by an elders' luncheon on May 18, where officers discussed issues with the community's most respected members.
"We also gave tours of the office," added Carpenter, saying many people are interested in learning about police work.
So what is next for the officers?
"When the ferry opens, we'll be going to Tsiigehtchic and holding a barbecue," said Carpenter.
