Iqaluit (Dec 18/06) - Hamlets from Kugluktuk to Sanikiluaq chose new councils and mayors Dec. 11.
Some notable mayoral races included upset wins for newcomers and wide margins of victory for incumbents.
In Hall Beach, sitting mayor Paul Haulli finished third out of three candidates. Arviat mayor Elizabeth Copland also lost her job, finishing third out of four candidates there. The new mayor is Johnny Marngark.
Kugluktuk Mayor Derrick Power won another two-year term by a comfortable margin.
Power said he wants to bring a women's shelter to his hamlet and get ice back in Kugluktuk's beleaguered arena.
In Iglulik, incumbent Paul Quassa, who was appointed to the mayor's position in 2005, cruised to an easy win over Thomas Kublu. Quassa wants to improve the community's social and financial health.
"(Being elected) makes me feel a lot more accountable to the community," he said.
Annie Amitook lost to hamlet recreation co-ordinator Eli Kavik in the mayor's race in Sanikiluaq.
In Baker Lake, incumbent David Aksawnee narrowly beat out challenger Joe Aupaluktuq.
In Whale Cove, the mayor's job went to Percy Kabloona over incumbent Stanley Adjuk in a tie-breaker after the candidates finished with 55 votes apiece.
Voter turnout ranged from a high of 76 per cent in Whale Cove, to a low of 25 per cent in Rankin Inlet.
Turnout figures in the Baffin region weren't available.
