Yellowknife (Oct 06/06) - A First Air flight destined for Iqaluit made an emergency landing Wednesday, after an alarm lit up in the cockpit.

The 737 aircraft landed safely at the Yellowknife Airport after taking off only moments before. Fire crews were summoned to standby but were not called into action. "We didn't call the emergency, the (airport) tower called the emergency," said Mike Olson, director of sales for First Air.

"There was no emergency landing call made by the pilot, it was a call made by the tower."

Olson said he doesn't know why the alarm went off.

"Not sure," he said. "I talked to the pilots and they couldn't say what was wrong."

The plane was carrying a full load of passengers.

He added that it's standard procedure for a plane to double back after a warning light turns on. "For us it was just routine."

Lee Stroman, acting chief of the airport fire division, also called it a routine landing.

"It's not uncommon at all for a craft to have indicator issues, and when it happens, we go into standby mode and wait for them," he said.

"There are hundreds of systems on an aircraft - all are monitored. If they get anything irregular, they call and say 'watch us,' and that's what we do."
