Inuvik (Sep 01/06) - A summer photography workshop for the youth was capped off with a public photo exhibit at the Inuvik Youth Centre last week.
The workshop was started earlier this summer by volunteer Jessica Gnyp and centre co-ordinator Brook Land-Murphy.
Gnyp said the youth worked hard learning the fundamentals of photography.
"We worked on composition and what makes a good picture," she said.
Weekly workshops were held, each focusing on a different aspect of the art. The youth used 35-millimetre cameras and had the pictures developed in the South.
The program was funded by the Territorial Arts Council, with money going towards the purchase of the cameras, film and the re-sizing of prints.
"One of the mandates for getting the grant was to host something for the public to see," said Gnyp.
The youth were sent out on the town to take their snapshots, each bringing something different to their exhibits.
Nine-year-old Trevor Thrasher took part in the workshop. Thrasher signed up for the course and immediately started snapping photos.
"I took pictures of my friends and places I liked to hang out."
Thrasher liked the camera experience because it heightened his interest in the hobby. "I want to have my own camera some day," said Thrasher. He plans to start saving his money to get a nice one.
Taking the pictures also has a deeper meaning for Thrasher. He wants to preserve his memories.
"Taking photos is a good way to remember family and friends you like," he said.
The photos will be on permanent display at the centre.
