Yellowknife (Aug 18/06) - The Top Knight was host to a fundraiser meant to help a local musician in a time of need.
Rick Poltaruk was honoured this past Saturday by musicians from across Yellowknife with songs and stories, with all proceeds from the night and the silent auction going towards his treatment.
"It was that I saw a friend in trouble and you simply don't turn your back on your friends," said Barbara Ellen, a friend and co-ordinator of the event.
Gary Tees helped with the event, and also performs with Poltaruk in Rick and the Relics.
"He called me a couple of times since he's been (in treatment) and he's overwhelmed," Tees said.
"I'm glad to do this 'cause you do it for friends."
Fellow performer and longtime friend of Poltaruk's, T-Bo also attended the event.
"He's very well respected and very loved, for the effort and time he's put into the (music) community."
"The response was out of this world," T-Bo said.
"I was really overwhelmed by the generosity of Yellowknifers when it came to Rick."
Jen Walden is a performer with Transience, a local band, but performed solo last night to help with the event.
"I'm a beginner in music, Rick Poltaruk has given me the open stage. I've had the opportunity to give back to him. He gives so much."
She also said the event was a success thanks to everyone who helped organize it as well as the musicians who performed.
