Corporate games axed

Yellowknife (Aug 11/06) - Yellowknife's Corporate Challenge, an annual competition that pits business against business, has been cancelled due to lack of team registration.

The event, which usually features everything from softball to speed eating, has been running for four years.

This is the first time it has been cancelled, according to organizers. "It allows workers to get to know each other not just on a work level, but to go out and have a good time," said Mary Beth Squirrel, special events co-ordinator with the City of Yellowknife.

The format of the event was changed this year.

It had been for two weeks in September, during the evenings.

This year the city decided to run the event on week-ends. "The main thing I heard was people being on holidays," Squirrell said.

Organizers will try the challenge again in 2007.

"Next year we'll be back into a two-week format, in the evening and more sporting events."

Squirrell plans to include a few events that everyone can participate in. "We're going to include wing eating and scavenger hunting and we'll see if we can put pool in there."
