Holman (July 24/06) - Tony Alanak, a fiddler from Ulukhaktok, is on his way to becoming a music teacher, but his true love remains the fiddle.
It's an art he says is different than classical violin, because it is more energetic and folksy.
"I like the sound, I like the tone," he says.
Last week, Alanak was flown to Parry Sound, Ont., to join other young musicians from Sioux Lookout, Ont., and Edmonton to perform at an outdoor festival.
He also participated in a week-long fiddle and guitar school, held at the community's Friendship Centre and received a scholarship. Upon his return, Alanak plans to teach youth in Ulukhaktok to play the fiddle.
Andrea Hansen, a teacher who works with Alanak, says the benefits of music are enormous.
She says it can provide a sense of freedom and creativity, which she hopes will be felt by youth in the North.
"I've travelled the world with my violin as my passport," she says.
