Arviat (Jun 28/06) - If you've ever wondered what sleeping under a $500 duvet feels like, then a new suite-hotel expected to open next month in Arviat could sate that curiosity.
With a budget in the neighbourhood of one million dollars, the seven-room Katimabik Suites is being billed as almost Sheraton-like by owners Eskimo Point Lumber Supply and Airport Services.
"There is nothing like it in the North," said Stephanie Czyz, a comptroller with Eskimo Point. "(The company) wanted it to be comparable to what you would find down south."
This marks the first foray into the hotel business for Eskimo Point, which also owns a retail store, office building and warehouse in Arviat, Czyz said.
The company is hoping to capitalize on tourists and travelling government employees with the Katimabik's two conference rooms and en-suite kitchens.
"There are really no other meeting rooms in town," Czyz said, who noted the space could be used for community feasts and cultural activities.
The rooms will cost between $170 and $180 per night, making them competitive with the other main hotel in town, Inns North, Czyz said.
Eskimo Point is touting the luxury of the new building, which has $500 imported duvet covers, she said.
Workers are putting the finishing touches on the suites and conference rooms and Czyz said the hotel should be up and running soon.
