Iqaluit (May 08/06) - The largest graduation class in recent history at Nunavut Arctic College bid farewell to school and hello to the working world late last month.

The graduates were paraded in with the help of drummer Celestine Erkitjuk.
Dignitaries in attendance included education minister Ed Picco, NTI President Paul Kaludjak and Arctic College President Malcolm Clendenning.
Clendenning has been at the helm of Arctic College for the past four years, and this is the largest class he has had the pleasure of graduating.
"This is a group that is fairly mature and we had a good retention rate this year," said Clendenning.
The retention rate for this year is near 60 per cent.
"I can't say if this is our highest graduation rate ever," said Clendenning.
He sees the trade programs the college offers as a key to helping the Nunavut unemployment rate.
"As many people as we can put through for trades will find jobs here," said Clendenning.
One Arctic College student is getting a chance to be a teacher as well. Georgina Illauq of Cape Dorset was the winner of the News/North language scholarship.
She is now in Paris, France, teaching conversational Inuktitut at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales.
Susan Sammons, Arctic College's director of programs, said Illauq was a great choice.
"She has a thorough understanding of the structure of the language. She is very personable, and she had high overall grades in the program," said Sammons.
Illauq was unavailable for comment.
