Yellowknife (Apr 07/06) - An 18-year-old man got tough with police after his mother called RCMP to report him and a friend for drinking and smoking marijuana in her home.
In territorial court Tuesday, the teen was fined $400 for resisting arrest.
The court was told that when an officer arrived, the accused grabbed at his arm. The officer told him not to touch him again, but the teen again grabbed the officer's arm and pushed him.
When the officer arrested the man and tried to handcuff him, the teen became aggressive and resisted. The officer was forced to use physical force to restrain him.
The Crown lawyer said it was troubling that it was the mother calling for help from the RCMP.
Defence lawyer Hugh Latimer said the accused denied smoking marijuana and was very ashamed of what happened. "He realizes he should have obeyed the police officer," he said.
Judge Robert Gorin said the fact the accused had pleaded guilty was a substantial mitigating factor, but the facts of the case were aggravating.
"I think you were trying to act like a hero for the benefit of your friends," Gorin said.
The teen was also ordered to pay a $60 victims of crime surcharge.
