A warm welcome for adventurers

Coppermine (Apr 03/06) - This isn't your grandmother's Sunday drive. A group of adventurers from Iceland drove around Nunavut and the NWT.

They recently stopped in Kugluktuk and residents turned out in force to see the men with their amazing machines.

When asked if the men were brave or crazy, Lucy Nivingalok thought neither title fit the bill.

"I'd have to say they were adventurers. It makes me want to get a truck like that," she said.

She could. The group is using Ford F-350 pickup trucks, heavily modified, but the same model you could buy off the lot.

Austin Maniyogena got to see the giant trucks.

"It was awesome. It had big tires. We were following them around town," said Maniyogena.

"I'd use it to go fishing and camping. They're cool because they're big and the colour."

After leaving Yellowknife, the group travelled north up to Tuktoyaktuk. They hoped to continue across the ice to Cambridge Bay and ultimately to Gimli, Man., but as they explained on their website, the people in Kugluktuk let them know it has been a very warm winter, and that trying to take the large trucks to Cambridge Bay was impossible.

They adjusted their route and headed to the Lupin Mine and returned to Yellowknife last week.
