Fort Good Hope (Mar 06/06) - Two Fort Good Hope men are in jail after pleading guilty to a home invasion that took place in October 2005.

Floyd Paul Kakfwi, 34, was sentenced to three years and Alden Joseph Lennie, 22, two years when they appeared in NWT Supreme Court in Yellowknife on Jan. 20. A mandatory firearms prohibition order of 10 years was also imposed on both men.

According to a transcript of the sentencing hearing, the men were wearing hoodies on their heads when they knocked on the door of a home and forced their way in.

Once inside, Kakfwi pushed the male occupant to the floor and held a knife to his throat while Lennie rummaged through the home.

Both were there for a brief time and after they left the residence, it was discovered they had taken a small amount of money and two packages of cigarettes.

Upon arrest, both admitted involvement in the incident.

During the hearing, Justice Ted Richard said the men were intoxicated and had just left a party and forced their way into the house in order to steal a bottle of alcohol. Richard described Kakfwi as having a "horrific" criminal record.

"Surely this is a final wake up call for him; the event that will make him decide to change his life," Richard said.

Kakfwi's record includes nine property offences, three of which are break and enters or being unlawfully in a dwelling-house.

He has also been convicted of eight weapons offences and eight crimes of violence. Lennie also had a criminal record, including convictions for sexual assault and property offences, said Richard. He was on probation at the time of the incident.

Richard said he could have imposed a prison sentence of between five and seven years, but decided against it because both had pleaded guilty.
