Iqaluit (Mar 27/06) - With a dismal turnout - fewer than one in four land claims beneficiaries voted - Nunavut Tunngaviks elections are over.
On March 21, 23 per cent of eligible voters across the territory turned up to cast their votes for vice-president of finance.
James Eetoolook was re-elected with 2,791 votes, defeating Joe Sageatook, who received 895 votes.
The Kivalliq region had the lowest turn-out in the territory, with just 17.9 per cent. The Kitikmeot came in with 20.9 per cent and the Baffin region led the pack with 27 per cent voter turnout.
Grise Fiord and Clyde River led the way, with 44.7 per cent and 48.1 per cent voter turnout respectively.
On the other side of the coin, Baker Lake posted an apathetic six per cent turnout. The next lowest turnout in Nunavut was Gjoa Haven with 14 per cent.
Even Nunavut residents living in Ottawa had a higher percentage, with 18 per cent of eligible voters in the city showing up to vote.
