Yellowknife (Jan 09/06) - The end of December was nice for law enforcement officers all over the territories.
This holiday season saw an aggressive approach to impaired driving in the North, with officers conducting check stops in various communities.
Cpl. Al Shepard of Fort Simpson said Christmas was very quiet and no impaired drivers were fined in his area.
"It's the best holiday we've had in years," said Shepard.
The roadside check stops were also very successful in Norman Wells, as Cpl. Donna Rorison reported.
Rorison said that nothing out of the ordinary was reported and the detachment conducted quite a few check stops to ensure road safety.
Some drinking infractions were encountered by police in Rae-Edzo, said Sgt. Bill Eubanks. He said the community held an assembly over the holidays, which kept the morale high.
Sgt. Craig Seafoot of the Fort Smith detachment said other than a few domestic disturbances, the break was a very nice one.
Checkstops were also held there, but Seafoot said nobody was charged with impaired driving. Other than Yellowknife, Inuvik appeared the most busy. Police responded to 68 incidents there involving alcohol, according to Cpl. Jom Strobridge.
Most were minor, but RCMP had to contend with calls about attempted suicides.
