Aklavik (Oct 24/05) - Drum dancing is a great way to promote Inuvialuit living, and is one of Philip Elanik's passions.

Elanik is a 27-year-old Inuvialuit, who was born in Inuvik.

He spent most of his childhood learning how to drum and dance from his elders in Aklavik.

"I was 14 years old when I got started," said Elanik.

"The school was running some programs, and I met some drummers through that."

Elanik learned a lot from the elders who came in and shared their stories of long ago.

"I listened to them tell their stories and it inspired me," said Elanik. Dancing came naturally to Elanik, who was looking for a way to help preserve his culture.

"I think our traditions are fading slowly, and it's up to all of us to hold on to them," said Elanik.

Elanik is a regular visitor on the land, and has hunted all his life.

"I go out on the land around Aklavik whenever I can. I love it," said Elanik.

He also had words of encouragement for people interested in dancing.

"Do it for yourself. You'll enjoy it more if you have the passion to learn the stories," he said.
