A tough decision

Yellowknife (Aug 10/05) - There are few people who cannot think of a favourite flavour of that universal treat - ice cream. But how does one choose but one of the many delectable flavours of ice cream available today?

Tisha Heron adds the finishing touch of Smarties sprinkles to a dish of soft-serve ice cream at Reddi-Mart.

Leslie Bromley, owner of Northern Lights Frozen Delights, says often it is the vibrant pastel colours which entice younger customers to base their decisions.

"Most of them have no idea what rainbow ice cream is but they like the fact that it is yellow, green and purple."

"And the colour purple is always popular because it reminds them of Barney," Bromley said.

But with 16 varieties of ice cream from which to choose, Bromley said customers still often stick to their favourites. "Vanilla is always a big one. It's an easy choice and something they know," Bromley said. Still, exotic, fun or delicious sounding names have won over many Yellowknife tastebuds when choosing the dessert which knows no age boundaries.

"Bubble gum is a favourite, as is tiger, cherry cheesecake, cotton candy and mudpie," Bromley said of a few of the more popular selections.

"It's like a comfort food. People have childhood memories associated with flavours of ice cream."

When it comes to the soft serve variety of ice cream, there are numerous options to jazz up the flavour, according to Tisha Heron of the Reddi-Mart convenience store downtown.

"People like Skor, Smarties and Reeses pieces sprinkles," Heron said of the many choices.

"But the most unusual thing we make is when people ask for flurries mixed with blueberry or pineapple topping," Heron said.
