Contracts, contacts and croissants

Yellowknife (June 15/05) - A background in pharmaceutical chemical technology does little to foster a career in the North, but that hasn't stopped Pat Thagard from succeeding.

After more than 10 years in Yellowknife and three in Cambridge Bay, instead of moving south, Thagard turned something she has always enjoyed into a growing business.

Two years ago she started Behind The Scenes, an event co-ordinating service for business, government and individuals. Last year, she completed her exams for national designation from the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council as an event co-ordinator. This summer she is taking a breather and reducing the number of contracts she accepts from six to one.

"I am at a growth point and considering where to go from here, including the possibility of hiring some part-time staff," she said.

In the past year, Thagard has had to turn down jobs she would normally have accepted. With staff, she would have been able to take those additional contracts. "I have been lucky that I am able to be selective in which contracts I take on," she said.

Thagard's first contract came from the Business and Professional Women's Association of Yellowknife two years ago. She has been planning the group's monthly meetings and arranging speakers since then. It's one of the deals she won't be renewing this year, but she will continue to be an active member.

"I am really looking forward to just enjoying the networking breakfasts and speakers, rather than focusing just on the co-ordination," she said.

The association provides a space for women to meet and socialize with other businesswomen in a wide range of vocations.

"As business people, and as women, and often as mothers, we can relate with each other on those levels," she said.

The association elected a new board of directors last night and will be deciding how to proceed in the future. Summer Halliday takes over as event co-ordinator soon.
