Two Grade 9-12 students from each community will spend July 12-25 paddling the Horton River and hiking the Smoking Hills as part of the second annual Inuvialuit Development Corporation Outward Bound Leadership Expedition.
The experience is designed to help youth develop courage, confidence, communication skills and teamwork by confronting and overcoming challenges.
Daily workshops and discussions will further add to the learning.
Towards the end of the two weeks, the students will even begin to facilitate the trip, said Martin Landry, manager, marketing and communications for IDC.
"The kids end up running the trip in the end."
In recognition of the traditional significance of the journey, respected elder Edward Lennie will attend for a few days to share his life and stories with the youth.
"He's done a lot of on the land learning with youth in the region for the last 30 years," said Landry.
Principals will recommend the Top 5 students from their enrolment based on academics, attendance and leadership potential, said Martin Landry, manager, marketing and communications for IDC.
"It's not just for 'A' students. It's also for those who've shown improvement or leadership potential."
