Approaching a century of Girl Guiding

Yellowknife (Apr 15/05) - From starchy heavy cotton dresses to casual sportswear, the uniform of the Girl Guide has changed over the years, but not the motto.

The promise to do one's best, to be true to oneself and to help others has been echoed by young girls through church basements and recreation halls for 95 years.

Erin Ladouceur, unit guide leader in the Yellowknife Girl Guides, said to celebrate the 95th anniversary of the national organization, a party will be held Saturday, from 12-4 p.m. at Northern United Place.

"We've been around in Yellowknife for a very long time," she said. A Girl Guide group was formed in 1941.

Ladouceur said she attributes the longevity of the organization to the fun and diverse environment.

"There is always fun, you are always meeting people and experiencing new things.

"Whether you are a leader or a girl, I think that is what keeps people involved," she said.

More than 140,000 girls and women belong to Guides Canada.

In the Northwest Territories and Nunavut combined, there are 797 members - 168 adults and 629 girls, active in 18 communities.
