Yellowknife (Feb 04/05) - The annual door-to-door campaign will soon be underway for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

In Yellowknife, Heart Month will be recognized by various fundraising initiatives.

Joy Watt, organizer of the Yellowknife campaign, said there are approximately 160 canvassers for the door-to-door campaign, but more are needed. The campaign runs between Feb. 5 and 21.

"We're asking people to open their hearts and give generously," Watt said.

Every year, donations for the foundation have been increasing, she said.

"People here do benefit from the research," said Watt.

Statistics show that more than 80 per cent of Canadians have one of the risk factors for heart disease.

Risks include smoking, being physically inactive, being overweight, having high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Watt said Yellowknife businesses have also been very supportive of the fundraising initiative.

At Boston Pizza, owner/operator Jeromy Ball said the business will participate Feb. 14 by selling paper hearts for one dollar, and also by selling heart-shaped pizza and donating one dollar from every sale.

Since 1993, Boston Pizza has raised more than $1.3 million for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

"Giving a heart-shaped pizza is as nice as giving a dozen roses for Valentine's Day," Ball said.
