Yellowknife (Jan 19/05) - The city is again preparing to show off its many artistic impressions of Yellowknife through its annual Heritage Art Show competition.

Held during Heritage Week, Feb. 20-26, Dave Jones, city planner, says artists' works are showcased through the competition each year while the public gets to enjoy both past and present scenes of this Northern city.

"We will have a call for art submissions for the show. The reception will be held Feb. 25," Jones said.

While Jones said the theme is reasonably broad, heritage life in Yellowknife is the general theme.

"We usually get a good response of about 15-25 works of art each year," he said.

Catherine Pellerin, vice-chair of the Heritage Committee, says the juried art show will hang for about one month in the Prince of Wales museum.

Works chosen for the show will depend not only on the quality of the artwork, but also on holes in the over-all collection which need to be expanded on, she says.

While submissions of artwork are predominate each year, Pellerin says a maximum of 20 works of photography will be accepted for the show.

"The artwork is not all one-dimensional," she says.

Past works have also included pottery, she notes.

This year's Heritage Week 2005 theme is "Heritage of Faith -- Canada's Sacred and Spiritual Places."

The same week as the adult show, there will be a junior art display at the Centre Square Mall of elementary school students' artwork.
