When the community-owned facility was in the planning stages, it's location was a contentious issue among some of the elders, said Annette Hastie, the new general manager who took over lodge operations on Sept. 5.

The building sits on what many believed to be sacred ground. It's across the road from the ruins of John Franklin's camp and kitty-corner to the cemetery.
"Many of our guests have reported seeing and/or hearing things," she said.
"When I arrived it was a beautiful place, but the building was empty so it had a Shining feel to it."
One woman who stayed at the Grey Goose said she awoke in the middle of the night to find she was sharing her room with not one, but four ghosts.
"She said they pinned her to her bed and held her there for sometime," said Hastie. "The next day she went out and bought a rosary, had it blessed and she didn't experience any other incidents during her stay."
But that's not to say the lodge has lost it connection to the spirit world.
"Many people say that late at night they hear a woman walking around in wooden shoes," she said, adding others hear laughter when no one else is there.
"Occasionally people will see something."
To date there haven't been any dishes flying off the shelves, so Hastie isn't too worried by the ghastly revelation.
"We don't have a poltergeist problem or anything," she said.
The night prior to interviewing Hastie, this News/North reporter experienced nightlife in the lodge first-hand while walking the deserted halls at about 11:30 p.m.
A woman dressed in a faded Hudson's Bay jacket appeared for a split second, but it was more than enough to make the neck hairs rise just the same.
"I'm going to do some more research into this site specifically," said Hastie. "I want to find out if there are any events documented in history that might help explain why this is happening."
