No unsolved break-ins in Pond Inlet

Pond Inlet (Dec 06/04) - Charges laid during the last week of November mean 12 break-in cases have been solved in the community within the last three months.

Residents are being credited now that the number of unsolved break and enter cases in the community has been reduced to zero.

"Without the community giving you a hand, it would be impossible," said Const. Denis Lambe. "It's pretty tough to solve (the break-ins) if nobody comes forward."

All of the November charges involved tips from the community, Lambe said.

On Nov. 17, more than $21,000 was stolen from the community's co-op.

The cash was on hand for a scheduled Nov. 19 pay-day.

"Because the co-op is community-owned, this was their money that was taken. The loser here is the people of the community," said Chris Mitchell, general manager of Toonoonik Sahoonik Co-op.

Police only recovered $500. Police believe the rest of the money was either given out or spent on marijuana.

The stolen money will be recovered out of dividend payments, Mitchell said.

On Nov. 25, Noah Innualuk and Terry Atadjuat were charged in connection to the co-op break-in. Both men were charged after coming into the detachment to deal with another matter.

"They had no idea that we knew anything about the break and enter," Lambe said.

Four other charges are still outstanding in the incident.

On Nov. 27, two men from the community were charged after two stereo systems, a DVD player and junk food were stolen from the Northern store. The items were returned to the store later that same day.

Aaron Peterloosie and E.J. Kasarnak were charged in connection to the Northern store break-in.

All of the men will be appear in court Feb. 8.
