Changes at the helm across Delta

Inuvik (Dec 20/04) - Proving that every vote counts, Sachs Harbour Mayor Andy Carpenter Sr. retained his title with only one vote to spare during the Dec. 13 municipal election.

Carpenter won the two-year term with 22 votes; challenger Roger Kuptana, had 21 votes. Lorna Dillon received four votes, while Lucy Kudlak had three votes in the bid for mayor.

Acclaimed as councillors for two-year terms were Kelly Carpenter, Lorna Dillon and Robert Eldridge.

One seat remains available for a one-year term as an appointee.

Abel Joshua Esau and Peter Esau Sr. both have one year remaining on their terms as councillors in Sachs Harbour.

New mayor for Holman

In Holman, incumbent Gary Bristow was ousted from the mayor's chair.

The new mayor is former councillor Peter Malgokak, who received 64 votes to Bristow's 27.

Mary K. Okheena received 19 votes.

"I'm looking forward to it," Malgokak said, adding that in the new year they will be looking at a plan for the hamlet, although he does not foresee any immediate changes.

Malgokak is involved with the Community Corp. as well as the Hunters and Trappers Committee. He was a councillor for six years.

In all, 111 out of 231 eligible voters cast their ballots.

Ray Ruben Sr., who received 65 votes, will be the new mayor for Paulatuk.

Former Mayor Keith Dodge did not run for another term. Ruben, a councillor since the 1980s, had been the deputy mayor.

"I want to have the hamlet as open to the community and other organizations as possible," Gruben said.

"And I want to continue the work on self-government."

Gilbert Thrasher at the hamlet office, said 132 voted out of 169 registered voters.

Ruben's closest contender, Debbie Gordon-Ruben, received 39 votes, while Frances Wolki had 28 votes.

Paulatuk results

The vote for councillors in Paulatuk resulted in the following being elected: Brian Kudlak Sr. 102 votes; Marlene Wolki, 90 votes; Albert Ruben Sr., 88 votes; Lawrence Ruben, 87 votes; Phoebe Ruben, 86 votes; Debbie Gordon-Ruben, 80 votes; and Frances Wolki, 72 votes.

Fort McPherson results

In the hamlet of Fort McPherson, Mary Rose Tetlichi, returning officer, said 212 out of 508 registered voters cast their votes for council and the District Education Authority (DEA).

An election for mayor will not be held until January 2006, Tetlichi said.

The following councillors were elected: Abe Wilson, 128 votes; Bill Prodromodis, 120 votes; Judy Colin and Taig Connell, 98 votes each; Gordon Clark, 83 votes; and Kendra Francis, 81 votes.

Elected as DEA members were: Rebecca Blake, 164 votes; Victoria Alexie, 148 votes; Mary Ross, 135 votes; Elizabeth Wright, 115 votes; Norma Snowshoe, 108 votes; William George Firth, 86 votes; and Eva Colin, 83 votes.

Aklavik results

Aklavik held its vote for both council and the recreation committee.

Voted into council were: Don D. Storr, 89 votes; Mary Ann Elanik, 88 votes; Roxanne John, 87 votes; Anna Lee McLeod, 77 votes; and Dale Semple, 76 votes.The three recreation committee members are: Mary Ruth Meyook, 115 votes; Jonathan Pascal, 105 votes and Don D. Storr, 94 votes.

Tuktoyaktuk results

While there were 12 candidates to choose from, the four elected to council were: Emma Wolki, 117 votes; Merven Gruben, 92 votes; Dennis Raddi Sr., 88 votes; and Georgina Jacobson-Masuzumi, 79 votes.

Vince Steen, Jackie Jacobson and Rex Cockney were elected to the board of directors of the Tuktoyaktuk Community Corp. for a two-year term until Dec. 31, 2006.

Georgina Jacobson-Masuzumi and Eunice Nasogaluak were elected to the board of directors of the Tuk Elders Committee for a two-year term.

Elected to the District Education Authority were: Emma Wolki, 135 votes; Jenny Jacobson, 125 votes; Lucille Pokiak, 105 votes and Jean Gruben, 101 votes.
