"They just found some tracks and they followed them," said Const. Martin Roy of the rescue effort which involved at least 11 snowmobiles from both communities.
"He was fine. I guess he was just waiting for the rescuers."
Two others, a boy and a girl, were found earlier that day, Dec. 7, walking towards Hall Beach from about 20 kilometres away. Names are not being released until the police investigation is done.
Both of the walkers were medevaced to Iqaluit after sustaining frostbite injuries to their feet, hands and face.
Temperatures in the community have been averaging -40C, Roy said.
The three youths, all of whom are under 18, are believed to have been travelling by snowmobile together.
After running into a storm, the group turned back and headed towards Hall Beach. However, at the beginning of their return trip, the trio ran out of gas, Roy said.
Police are still trying to determine what caused the three youth to split up.
